Counter Tobacco’s 2012 Photo Contest Winners
Counter Tobacco is excited to announce the winners of our first-ever photo contest! We asked our audience for photos of tobacco industry marketing at the point-of-sale, and were impressed by the breadth and creativity of the photos submitted.

Our category winners for best map or infographic are Malcolm Ahlo for a map of tobacco retailer density in Hispanic communities in Southern Nevada, and Ruth Greenslade for an infographic of tobacco industry marketing and youth smoking in Dodge County, Minnesota.

Our winner for stores near schools comes from a member of our international audience in Japan, Masako Shigeta, for two photos of a tobacco product vending machine, and one with schoolgirls in front of it.

Our category winners for greatest youth appeal are Lisa Weston-Bialy for a cigarette advertisement next to one for ice cream, Candyse Arivett for an image of kids surrounded by advertisements for cigarettes, and Grand Prize Winner Sue Casanova for images of teddy bears in front of a Marlboro display. An honorable mention goes to Rhonda Boykin for her capture of a popular children’s brand of movies being sold next to a pack of cigarettes, on top of an advertisement for tobacco.
Funniest or Most Ironic

Our winners for funniest/most ironic are Amanda Mortenson’s image of a display promoting summer reading and cigars, Andy Pope’s capture of gas station advocating to stop an anti-smoking group and Nicole Sutton’s image of a cigarette advertisement next to one for soft drinks. An honorable mention goes to Melanie Flack for her photo of “family savings” including EBT food benefits and cigarettes.

Category winners for best products near candy include Tammy Kreiser’s capture of a candy and tobacco mixed vending machine, Allison Bruce’s image of candy displayed in front of shelves of cigarettes, and Stacia Brezinski’s photo of tobacco products next to candy. An honorable mention goes to Sam Vanstrom for an image of Krave electronic cigarettes next to packages of chewing gum.
